Linwood School Breaks Ground

September 26, 2012

Taking part in the Linwood School groundbreaking were (back row from l.) State Senator Allan Kittleman, Delegate James Malone, Delegate Steven DeBoy and (front row from l. ) County Council member Jen Terrasa, School Board member Ellen Flynn Giles, State Senator James Robey, Delegate Guy Guzzone, Delegate Gail Bates, Linwood Executive Director Bill Moss, Delegate Shane Pendergrass, County Executive Ken Ulman, County Council member Courtney Watson, Linwood Board Chair Jack Boender, Linwood student Dylan Salavics, and County Council Chair Mary Kay Sigaty.

On September 12th, Linwood Center broke ground on a $6.5 million school.  Elected officials, staff members, donors, neighbors and other supporters attended the celebration.

Linwood School will house a state-of-the-art educational program in a 2-story 36,000 square foot building.  In addition to accepting students on the more challenging end of the spectrum, the new school will allow Linwood to provide services for kindergarten to 12th grade students with less severe forms of autism. There are no other comprehensive nonpublic autism programs close to Howard County, and many local students with autism are bused to schools outside the county.

Linwood Center’s mission is to create the possibility of extraordinary lives for children and adults living with autism and related developmental disabilities by providing education, vocational training, residential support and employment opportunities.
