Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
Linwood Center for children with autism was founded in 1955 by teacher and
therapist Jeanne Simons. Sabine Oishi, co-author of The Hidden Child,
skillfully combines Simons' case studies, anecdotes, and reminiscences
with her own observations and research to produce a readable, moving
account. She provides an excellent explanation of autism, then a
step-by-step analysis of the Linwood method of establishing relationships,
patterning good behavior, overcoming compulsions, developing skills, and
fostering social and emotional development. This valuable guide book for
teachers and therapists also has a hopeful message for parents of children
with autism.
Book Description
An in-depth look at the nationally acclaimed Linwood Method--a ground
breaking therapy and education program for children with autism developed by
Jeanne Simons, and practiced at the Linwood Center in Ellicott City,
Maryland. The approach described here is based not on a predetermined plan
or pace, but in response to the therapists' understanding of the origins and
meaning of each child's behaviors. Hundreds of vignettes and anecdotes
supplement the text. |
